This new-build sixth form centre at Poynton High School replaces over-capacity portacabin facilities and has created an inspiring learning environment, enhanced by open-plan, naturally ventilated social spaces. It has contributed to rebranding the school and creating a statement addition to the campus.

The centre comprises ten teaching classrooms – three of which have folding acoustic walls that open to form an exam hall) – two IT suites, supporting offices, meeting rooms, stores and ancillary facilities. These various facilities are focused around a central hub space that is split across two levels into a café / work zone and breakout spaces.

Rather than being obscured by the existing school building, the sixth-form building can be seen from the street, without appearing over-scaled. It features full length, coloured glazing set within non-uniform mullions. The first-floor work-zone is clearly visible and is articulated by aluminium composite panels, dark blue brickwork and polyester powder coated windows.

The new building has a bright, contemporary appearance and provides useable space efficiency which can adapt to changing needs and curriculum demands.
