Originally built in the 1970s, the existing leisure centre did not adequately signpost its internal functions externally, lacked accessible facilities and had poor thermal performance. As such, it had high running costs and was difficult to maintain.
Structural test showed that the pool, its surrounds and it frame were still structurally sound, meaning it didn’t need to be fully replaced as originally thought. A design was subsequently developed that would retain the pool and sports hall ‘book ends’, but to rebuild everything in between.
The building now boasts a new entrance, reception, café, fitness suite, dance studio, creche and changing facilities. A highly visible entrance helps to signpost the centre, while wide corridors, compliant flexible changing areas and updated exercise spaces have created a more enjoyable customer experience. A new, smaller heating plant has made space for a new 120-seat pool spectator area and the building is now wrapped in a thermally efficient envelope.
The end result is a simple, modern, light and cost-effective building and an example of how a pragmatic approach can deliver an outstanding facility without the need for a full rebuild.
